This video is one Chinese immigrant's story.
The Chen Family
Back: De, Hu
Front: Ai, Bao (mother), Peng, Wei (father), Shi
Arrived in Canada: 1901
Homeland: China
Father's occupation: Merchant
Why did they come to Canada: Wei's father first came to Canada in the 1880s to help build the railroad in this region. After hearing about the opportunities Canada offered, Wei decided to move his family here. He wanted to escape poverty and overcrowding in China. The Chen family had a lot of money in China, which was fortunate because they had to pay a "head tax" of $100 for every family member to enter Canada.
